Mayor Becker Proclaims ‘Deedee Corradini Day’, Orders City Bells to be Rung on Monday

In recognition and remembrance of Mayor Deedee Corradini’s service to the residents of Salt Lake City, Mayor Ralph Becker has declared Monday, March 9, 2015 Deedee Corradini Day.

Mayor Becker has also ordered that the bells of the Salt Lake City & County Building be rung eight times at noon on that day, signifying Corradini’s eight years as Mayor of the Capital City.

Salt Lake City government flags have been flying at half-mast for the past week and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has ordered flags across the state lowered to half-mast on March 9 in honor of Mayor Corradini.

Mayor Corradini’s funeral service will be held on Monday, March 9 from noon-1 p.m. at Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 1626 S. 1700 East in Salt Lake City. The family has requested the following concerning media presence at the funeral service and reception:

-No cameras, filming or audio recording inside the church

-No interviews inside the church

-Please respect the privacy of family members, friends and colleagues who will be attending the service

-The reception following the funeral service is closed to media

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Mayor Deedee Corradini served, with tireless dedication, the residents of Salt Lake City for two terms, from 1992-2000; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini always embraced, and worked for, a future vision of our City as a burgeoning regional, national and international leader in commerce, transit and progressive policy; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini brought residents, business owners and government leaders together to help establish TRAX light rail service in Salt Lake City, a system now much-envied by cities across the country; and

WHEREAS, in an area of blight and disuse, Mayor Corradini saw the new home of the Gateway, a development that brought expansive new retail, entertainment, residential and commercial opportunities to downtown Salt Lake City; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini championed the construction of a new City stadium, now the home of the University of Utah baseball team and the much-loved Salt Lake Bees, the AAA affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini played a critical role in advocating for and securing Salt Lake City as the host of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, not only showcasing the warmth of our residents and vitality of our City to a worldwide audience, but also laying the foundation for an event now lauded as the most successful Winter Games ever; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini continued her selfless commitment to others even after leaving public office by leading the effort to make Women’s Ski Jumping an official Olympic event, which came to fruition at the 2014 Games in Sochi, where it premiered as a medals event; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Corradini’s indomitable spirit will be greatly missed and her many contributions to the residents of Salt Lake City, the state of Utah and countless others, will be long remembered.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ralph Becker, Mayor of Salt Lake City, do hereby declare Monday, March 9, 2015 as DEEDEE CORRADINI DAY
