Mayor to Help Launch New City Bike Route with Community Ride
Self-guided tour takes riders to City highlights

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker, the Salt Lake City Transportation Division and Visit Salt Lake invite residents and media representatives to participate in a community bike ride, press event and reception to launch the new Cycle the City bike tour route. The ride begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at Pioneer Park and follows a section of the route to the Salt Lake Visitors’ Center, 90 West Temple. A press conference will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the center followed by a reception.

“Visitors and residents are invited to check out this new half-day ride that takes in some of the best of Salt Lake City,” said Mayor Becker. “This is another exciting addition to our ongoing Year of the Bike events.”

Developed by the Salt Lake City Transportation Division, the 13.5-mile loop includes wayfinding guides to Pioneer Park, Temple Square, Memory Grove, lower City Creek Canyon, the Utah State Capitol, Liberty Park, the Peace Gardens and the Jordan River Trail and goes past architectural gems such as the McCune Mansion, Salt Lake City & County Building and Salt Lake City Main Library.

"Visit Salt Lake is thrilled to support the Year of The Bike. The GREENbike program and the new bike route make downtown Salt Lake City even more accessible and convenient for our visitors,” said Visit Salt Lake President and CEO Scott Beck.  “These two new programs demonstrate our community's ongoing commitment to sustainability, and to the stewardship of the unique natural environment we call Salt Lake."

In collaboration with Visit Salt Lake, the City has created a special route map and brochure, available at the Salt Lake Visitors’ Center, local bike shops, and through downtown visitors’ venues.  The route is also highlighted on the City’s new 2013/14 Salt Lake City Bikeways Map.

For those who want to explore the route, but may not have bicycle access, the Bicycle Transit Center at the Intermodal Hub and several other bike shops in Salt Lake City provide full-day bicycle rentals.  The new GREENbike bike share system is another great way to see the City by bicycle.
