RDA to Host Central Ninth Urban Design Workshop on Streetscape Beautification

SALT LAKE CITY — The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA) invites Central Ninth residents, business owners and neighborhood stakeholders to provide input on plans to improve the 900 South streetscape at the Central Ninth Urban Design Workshop, a three-day intensive visioning exercise. From Tuesday, November 10 to Thursday, November 12, a team of experienced urban designers and planners will be guided by the community’s input to create a plan for new infrastructure, improved landscaping, traffic calming and other design elements for Central Ninth’s 900 South thoroughfare between West Temple and 300 West.

The Workshop will be held at the Local First Utah building at 865 S. 200 West, and includes three public meetings. Kicking off with an Idea Exchange Workshop on Tuesday, November 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., members of the community are invited to meet with the Design Team, RDA staff and representatives from Salt Lake City’s Planning and Transportation Divisions to share their visions for the streetscape, ask questions and share any concerns. Based on this input, the Team will work on-site all day Wednesday, welcoming the public to view the evolving plans at a Drop-In Working Session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. that evening. The Team will continue to work throughout Thursday, November 12, with the Workshop concluding that night at a public Design Unveiling reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“The recent groundbreaking of the Central Ninth Market, and the RDA’s upcoming selection of developers for additional land parcels, shows that Central Ninth is becoming an increasingly attractive urban destination for businesses and residents alike,” said RDA Director DJ Baxter. “We are pleased to support the area’s continued beautification, economic vitality and community engagement by asking the surrounding neighborhood stakeholders to guide us in this design process.”

About Central Ninth- Encompassing everything between 800 South and the 900 South freeway off ramp, and between West Temple and 300 West, Central Ninth is home to a growing number of locally owned businesses, with 900 South serving as the neighborhood’s commercial node. Central Ninth also features a strong residential component. Its tree-lined streets boast charming bungalows, multi-family units and even some newly built, modern single-family homes. Central Ninth is part of the RDA’s larger West Temple Gateway redevelopment project area, which was established in 1987.
