Salt Lake City, Provo Mayors Continue Rivalry Wager
Destination of 45-mile bike ride hinges on outcome of U of U-BYU game
SALT LAKE CITY – Even though the long-term fate of Utah’s favorite rivalry between the University of Utah Utes and the Brigham Young University Cougars may be in jeopardy, Mayor Ralph Becker and Provo Mayor John Curtis will once again allow fate and the players on the field decide the outcome of the 5th Annual Mayors’ Rivalry Ride.
The tradition, begun in 2008 with Mayor Becker and then-Provo Mayor Lewis Billings, dictates the winning school’s host city becomes the destination of a community bicycle ride, led by the Mayors, that begins in the loser’s hometown. Thus far, the 45-mile jaunt has ended in Salt Lake City three out of the four years since its debut, though the 2012 version looks to be one of the toughest to call.
Can the Utes overcome the surprise loss of their starting QB? Will BYU players come to the Capital City with vengeance on their minds after last year’s lopsided loss? Two things are certain–the game will be memorable and the mayors and their entourages of cycling/football devotees will make the ride, north or south, on Oct. 12. Everyone is invited to ride along.
