Summary of the May 26 City Council Meeting


The Council continued to discuss details of Mayor Ralph Becker's proposed Fiscal Year 2015-16 budget. Discussion centered on budgets for the following departments:

  • Public Services — specifically funding for maintaining and replacing trees in the City's urban forest. The Council identified urban forestry as one of its 2015 priorities. The Council also discussed how funding could help programming at Pioneer Park, street repairs, crossing guards, and dog parks. Read more.
  • Fleet Division — specifically a replacement plan for fleet vehicles, including the feasibility of outsourcing some of the City's fleet vehicle needs. Read more.
  • Fire — specifically possible changes to inspection procedures. Read more.
  • Finance Department — specifically the City's parking meters and parking meter revenue and fee increases for residents who live in Special Lighting District L03. Read more.
  • Consolidated Fee Schedule — specifically golf fees and a possible flexible fee system depending on time of year and day. Read more.

The Council held a public hearing on the City’s budget on May 19. The Council will continue to discuss the Fiscal Year 2015-16 budget before adopting it in June and will continue the public hearing on June 2.

The Council also discussed proposed Budget Amendment No. 4 to the Fiscal Year 2014-15 Budget. Conversation centered on considering some of the proposed amendments as part of the related Capital Improvement Project budgets for the upcoming Fiscal Year. Read more.

Fire Chief Appointment

The Council interviewed and approved the appointment of Brian Dale as the new Salt Lake City Fire Chief. Read more.

TIGER Grant Application

The Council was briefed about a possible upcoming application that the Utah Transit Authority may be making to the Federal Department of Transportation in their latest round of Transportation investment Generating Economic Recovery grant funding. The Council will take action on this topic at a later date. Read more.
